Simply The Best Digital SLR Camera - Period

!±8± Simply The Best Digital SLR Camera - Period

So, you've decided to make the jump from simple point and shoot cameras into the realm of SLR photography. If you've done any sort of research, your mind and eyeballs are probably reeling from an overload of information. Digital SLR photography, is one those hobbies that is rich with technological jargon. It gets worse, if your one of the perfectionist type that really likes to minutely analyze any major purchase . . . intent on getting the best digital SLR camera for your money. You could be in for a long bumpy ride. Today it's time to shorten that ride and smooth out the bumps.

Lets get right to it. It's very true, that the immense popularity of digital cameras (SLR and otherwise) and rapid technical advances have produced a glut of choices and features that can be bewildering to the average consumer. Those same trends have have also pushed manufactures and retail establishments to be highly competitive in both design and pricing. That's something that can only benefit the consumer. In a couple of ways actually. Not only do you have a bevy of choices, but the vast majority of those SLR choices are really good cameras. Long story short . . . it's hard to go wrong in this category. I'll make it even simpler for you. Pick any one of the following three digital SLR cameras, and you won't be disappointed. They are the Canon Digital Rebel XTi, the Nikon D40, and the Olympus Evolt E510. As of this writing, the 10 megapixels flavors for these cameras are all available for about 0. That includes a basic kit lens. That feels like highway robbery, compared to the 00 I paid for a good point and shoot digital just a few years back.

When looking for the best digital SLR camera you can find, the important word to remember is "YOU". Ask a dozen camera enthusiasts why they their favourite camera is their favourite, and you likely get a dozen answers. Every photographer takes pictures for different reasons, values different attributes in the finished pictures, and handles a camera differently. And so will you. A good hands-on exercise before making your final selection, would be to go to a speciality camera store with lots of models on hand, during a non busy time. Try out as many models as you can, taking pictures of people, things, shadows, and any odd lighting areas of the store you can. Try different lenses to. Have lots of questions for the sales people, but take their answers with a grain of salt. They are sales people after all. The actual experience of handling and using the camera should be your final factor in making your decision. Not specifications like burst mode, megapixels, ISO, or sensor size. The best digital camera, is the one that enables YOU to take the best pictures you can.

Testing a Transformer - How To Accurately Test A Transformer

!±8± Testing a Transformer - How To Accurately Test A Transformer

There is two types of transformers in the market- linear transformer and switch mode power transformer. The transformers design is different. Sometimes it is just referred as ac transformer. Linear transformer mostly used in radio, project kits, VCD and etc while switch mode transformer can be found in Monitor, Tv, Fax and so on.

A transformer consists of two or more coils wound on the same core. For power transformers, the core material is usually iron. For a radio-frequency transformer, the core material is usually ferrite or air. The basic property of a transformer is to change AC voltage. A transformer cannot change direct current voltage. A step down transformer has a lower AC output voltage at its secondary winding than the AC input voltage to its primary winding. Conversely, a step up transformer has a higher secondary than primary voltage. The transformer laminations or coating of shellac, enamel or varnish is to insulate adjacent turns from shorts between winding. I will not go too details about how transformer work and transformer calculation as you can read more details from most electrical and electronic transformers books.

How to test transformers: Transformer failures are relatively rare in most electronic equipment, compared with other components. If too much current goes through a coil or winding, the winding heats up and can either open up completely, or the insulation between turns of wire can break down, causing the coil to be partly or completely shorted.

Just like a coil, you can check continuity of any primary or secondary transformer winding. The actual value of DC resistance you read is rather meaningless, but at least you will know whether a winding is open. Checking linear transformer is quite straight forward. Apply the ac voltage to the primary winding and expect output voltage at the secondary side. No or low output voltage means the transformer winding has open or shorted winding. Look for any evidence of overheating, such as darkened or blackened areas or a burnt smell.

About how to test a power transformer-it is a little bit complicated. You cannot apply ac voltage to the equipment and expect the desire output at the secondary side without connect to load otherwise over voltage will happen (because you have removed all the secondary load) and will blow the power section which consist of power fet, pwm ic and etc. Switch mode power supply are designed to run with load while linear transformer can be test without load.

The best way to test a switch mode power transformer is first remove it from the board. Check only the primary winding as secondary winding failures are exceedingly rare. How do we know which one is the primary winding? Trace from the big filter cap the positive pin to see where the circuit goes. It will go to one of the pin of the transformer. Then look for the power fet middle pin which is the Drain and it will lead to another pin of the transformer. This two pins is the primary winding of the transformer. Checking the resistance of the primary winding only can reveal whether it is open but it cannot check if it has developed a shorted winding. Only by using a ringer test you will know if it shorted or not. A shorted turn in the primary winding can cause the power section to blow.

The cheapest ringer tester that i came across is Dick Smith LOPT METER or flyback tester. Just connect the probes to the primary winding and the result are instantly seen from the Led bar graph. 4-8 bar represent a good winding, 1-2 bar represent partial short and if the led goes off means there is a heavy short in the winding. Besides checking the transformer it can be use to check B+ COIL, horizontal yoke coil and flyback primary winding and ballast (choke).

The expensive ringer tester is from sencore equipment. Sencore LC102 and LC103C besides checking capacitor it also have the capability to check all kind of winding. Whether it is a low voltage transformer, high voltage transformer, current transformer, pulse transformer, electric transformer, custom transformer this equipment will be able to check and test it.

If you do not wish to invest on this tester you may use a light bulb to check it. Remove one of the primary winding pin and connect a 60 watt light bulb. One end to the circuit while the other to the transformer pin. If the bulb light and didn't goes off suspect a shorted winding and if the light goes off, the winding is ok.

Transformer repair is not easy and it require a good skill to do it. Most of the transformer repairer preferred to rewind bigger winding such as fan, car alternator and starter. Switch mode power transformer is a little bit difficult to rewind because of the small size and low price.

How To Use Camera Filter Systems

!±8± How To Use Camera Filter Systems

A camera filter system allows photographers to become creative and to experiment with the effects they present. Although it is now possible to digitally manipulate images at the post-processing stage and even to mimic the effects of some types of filters, there is arguably nothing more pleasing than seeing the effects of filtered light before it hits the camera's sensor.

There are two types of camera filter systems: slot-in filters and screw-in filters. The former are square or rectangular pieces of glass, or optical resin, which slot into a filter holder that is attached to the camera lens. The latter are circular, and simply screw into the front of the lens.

Slot-In Filters

The chief reason why these filters are very popular is because the same filters and holder can be used with any lens. Adapter rings of various thread sizes fit onto the filter holder, and the holder can be released and attached with a different size ring, thus allowing the photographer to swap filters between lenses.

In fact, a holder can support two or even three filters at once, making it possible to be creative with them. These slot-in filter systems are very cost-effective, although they are not cheap.

For DSLR and Film SLR cameras there are 67 mm, 85 mm, and 100 mm slot-in filter holders. But the bigger the holder, the more expensive the holder and the filters will be, but the risk of vignetting is progressively reduced. The smaller system is not really compatible with short focal lengths.

Screw-In Filters

In order to use these filters you have to obtain them in diameters that fit your lenses. So if you have 58 mm and 77 mm lenses, say, you will have to obtain a 58 mm and a 77 mm screw-in filter. Clearly it is impracticable as well as uneconomical to acquire a set of screw-in filters for each different thread size.

So what is the solution? Well, you can use step-down rings. These rings allow a lens's thread size to accommodate larger filters to fit lenses with a smaller diameter. The downside to this is that you have to obtain a set of filters that fit the largest diameter lens in you lens system, and in the majority of cases it means investing in filters of 77 mm or 82 mm in size. Unfortunately, filters of this size are costly and heavy. Step-up rings attach smaller filters to larger diameter lenses, but are less practical.

And there is another downside in relying on screw-in filters: you are stuck with the fixed graduation zone.

It is possible to use filters on compact cameras, too, even though they have no threaded lens. You can now obtain specific filter holders that attach to any compact camera via the screw thread at the base that is used to attach the camera to a tripod. Some can hold up to four filters at any one time.

How things rapidly progress!

Couple Poses For Photography - Which Poses Work the Best?

!±8± Couple Poses For Photography - Which Poses Work the Best?

If you do a lot of work with couples who want to get flattering portraits of themselves, then once in a while you might run out of ideas for poses. Here's many ways to take casual, romantic, or simply unique photos of the couple.

Before you think about the poses, you should also put some thought into things like how to bring out their unique personalities and how to depict the nature of the relationship between them. Depending on preference, the portrait might be taken in your studio, outdoors such as a garden or park, or at a location with a special importance to the couple. You could ask the couple to bring personal props to use for this purpose.

Here's the list of great pose ideas. Take away what you think might work well for the shoot.

1. Classic shot - either one sitting and the partner stands behind them with a hand on their shoulder.
2. Close up of the woman resting her head on the man's shoulder or chest, or simply having their arms around each other.
3. Close up of the two of them looking into each other's eyes. This is a profile shot with their heads turned to face each other.
4. A more romantic one - the man giving a light kiss on her forehead, cheek or even her neck, while she closes her eyes and smiles softly. This can be done from the front or as a profile shot.
5. Instead of the usual shots, the couple could be laughing or smiling at each other, instead of the camera-ready smile. To achieve this, it's great to have the couple simply talking with each other, while ignoring the camera.
6. Action photos also work well. Try some physical, unusual activities - wrestling, running through a field of flowers, chasing each other on the beach, and so on.

Start trying out these shots, and with practice you will soon start to get a hang of it. This is an easy way to learn how to take great portrait photos.

Differences Between Film and Digital

!±8± Differences Between Film and Digital

The modern, film-based single lens reflex (SLR) camera is a complex of electronics, mechanics, and ultra high-precision optics. A major part of its operation is concerned with winding-on and rewinding the film - in the camera illustrated here, a motor performs this function as well as controlling the mirror action. As you would expect, autofocus cameras require a further layer of complicated integration between the electronics, optics, and mechanics.

While a digital camera is no less complicated in its mechanical and optical construction, its electronics are far more powerful than you would find in a film-based model. A major saving is not having to transport the film -the design for a static photosensor is far easier than that for a moving strip of film. But nearly all other film-based camera operations are needed.

Image structure

Film
- silver grains or dye clouds of varying size distributed in a random pattern.
Digital
- same-sized sensor pixels arranged in a regular grid, or raster array.

Colour recording

Film
- colours in the scene separated by red-, green-, and blue-sensitive layers.
Digital
- colours in the scene separated by Bayer pattern of red, blue, and green filters.

Colour reproduction Image amplification

Film
- dye clouds of cyan, magenta, and yellow. Development by chemical action.
Digital
- interpolated from colour filter array. Electronic and digital processes.

Image quality

Film
- depends on film speed, grain structure, and processing regime.
Digital
- depends on sensor resolution and interpolation methods; also compression, if used.

Storage

Film
- image fixed by removing unexposed silver black and white stable, colour less so.
Digital
- image stored temporarily on memory cards or hard-disks.

Types of Camera Filters For Outdoor Photography

!±8± Types of Camera Filters For Outdoor Photography

When taking shooting outdoors, one of a photographer's best allies is the camera filter. This is a necessity particularly when sunlight is involved. It is because this camera accessory helps in managing the amount of light while you're taking photos of your favorite subjects such as nature, landscape and the like.

A camera filter is a transparent optical element that changes the properties of light going through the camera lens. It affects sharpness, color, contrast and light intensity. In short, helps in enhancing the image being captured by your equipment.

Additionally, it can create wonderful special effects in the images you're trying to capture with your camera lens. The effects that can be created by filters are varied such that it allows the photographer to actually control the message he or she is trying to convey. Depending on one's goal, the filters can assist camera owners in manipulating thoughts and emotions and even make images as real as they can be despite the fact that they've been artificially produced.

There are different types of camera filters on the market today. For photography enthusiasts who have an eye for landscapes, the polarizer is strongly recommended. This circular tool helps in saturating color and contrast thereby cutting down on haze and reflected sunlight. The effect it creates is a clear blue sky with clouds and colors that are able to stand out. However, it also has the ability to darken a blue sky such as when using color as well as black and white film. It can also control unwanted reflections from certain surfaces such as when you're taking photos of water or glass during which your ideal angle should be at 33 degrees incident to them.

Ultraviolet filters are a must when shooting frequently under intense heat notably at high altitudes and at locations. This digital camera accessory absorbs UV light without any effect on the lighting condition of the images you're taking.

Infra-red filters are used in special situations that require the use of black and white or color films sensitive to infra-red. In this case, different filters are utilized to prevent any unwanted light. Filters in red, orange and yellow help improve contrast and alter color.

Neutral density (ND) filters are usually ideal to use when photographer want to obtain the right exposure in a situation that involves too much light intensity. This type of filter is capable of absorbing light evenly without the need to change lens opening and shifting colors. It can also be used together with other filters.

Graduate ND filters is necessary when you're taking shots of very bright scenes where you don't have control of the light. This type is available in a variety of combination colors to eliminate the use of two filters.

Lens filters are also available in various grades depending on the effect you want to achieve in different situations. Basically, choosing the higher grade number produces a stronger effect.

So with a filter on your equipment, you can freely take images of landscapes even when there's much sunlight. This also applies when you're using a video camera.
